It's generally said that building a house is easier than buying land for it. The reason is, a significant part of the budget is usually depleted while buying the land, especially when a person is trying to build a house on a small budget.

A young man cleverly solved this problem by building a small house on the upper floor of an old single-storied traditional house. This saved money on land, and was able to keep the son and his family under one roof. Rahishad and his family share the details of this successful project in Kundara, Kollam district.

There were two challenges when building a new house on top of a 32-year-old house. One, whether the old house could support an additional floor. Two, the issue of heat. To reduce weight, the walls were built using AAC blocks. Also, instead of a concrete roof, sheets were used for the new house's upper floor. Insulating sheets and a gypsum ceiling were used underneath to reduce heat.

The 1000 sqft house includes a spacious balcony, sit-out, living area, prayer space, one bedroom, and a bathroom. The star of the house is the 250 square foot bedroom. It is beautifully decorated, like those found in luxury homes. A separate bed space was also created for the child. It features a bay window, ample storage, a dressing area, a bathroom, and a folding table for ironing.

The house also has 5 kw of solar panels. Of Rs 3 lakh spent, seventy-eight thousand were received as a subsidy. Previously, the electricity bill was around six to seven thousand rupees. Now, it's only 175 rupees, the basic bill.

Cost-cutting factors included reducing square footage while maximizing space utilization. AAC blocks were used for the walls, and concrete roofing was avoided. Slightly damaged tiles were obtained at a rate of 38 rupees per square foot. Labour costs were reduced in welding, construction, painting, wiring, and other aspects.
