The house named 'Pulari,' in Karuvatta of Alappuzha district belongs to the couple, Abhilash and Sreelu, A beautifully crafted house in traditional style, the prime highlight of it is its cost-effective budget. The 1880 square feet house, including the structure and furnishing, was completed for Rs 40 Lakh.
The homeowners envisioned a single-storey house in traditional style with good ventilation and natural light. The design reflects this. Although it looks like a two-storey house from the outside, it's a single-story building. The tiled roof is multi-tiered with truss work.
Upon entering the house, a notable feature is the ramp alongside the steps leading to the sit-out, making it wheelchair accessible. The sit-out has two doors. One of them opens to the heart of the house – the courtyard. It features an open roof allowing good airflow, sunlight, and rainfall, with grills provided for security.
This is a perfect model for building a courtyard on a low budget. Often, in traditional house plans, the courtyard is in the centre, requiring passages around it, increasing the square footage and budget. However, here, shifting the courtyard to one side eliminated the need for surrounding verandas. Furthermore, maintenance is relatively easier. Only teak wood has been used for the main door. The remaining panelling, furniture, window grills, and shutters are all made of WPC (Wood Plastic Composite). This helped reduce furnishing costs.
A sit-out, living room, dining room, kitchen, work area, courtyard, three bedrooms, attached bathrooms, and a stair room have been included in the 1880 square feet area of the structure. The main door opens into a simply furnished living room. The furniture is customized. Matt finished vitrified tiles of 4X2 size are laid on the floor. Meanwhile, Moroccan-finish tiles are laid in the long passage here.
The dining area features a bench-concept table unit. One wall in the dining area is highlighted with a cement texture. A sliding glass door provides access to the courtyard from the dining area. The kitchen is compact and efficiently designed with a grey colour theme and ample storage.
The bedrooms are located on the side, away from the living and dining areas, ensuring privacy. A bay window opening to the courtyard is also provided in this passage. The three bedrooms are simply furnished with essential amenities. In these times of high construction costs, completing this house with so many amenities for approximately ₹2100 per square foot is no small feat.
