Food adulteration is emerging as a major health threat. With our changing eating habits and lifestyle, it has become difficult to tackle the issue. When such eatables are consumed and absorbed by the body, the DNA in our cells loses the ability to separate the carcinogenic elements. These cells soon turn cancerous and create damage in various areas of the body.
The Malayalam film ‘Pattabhiraman’, with actor Jayaram in the lead, deals with this crucial issue plaguing Kerala society which is a major cause for cancer.
Considering these aspects, it can be certainly said that people in Kerala are slowly poisoning themselves, says Dr Verghese Thomas, a cancer surgeon who heads the Oncology Department at Renai Medicity in Ernakulam.
“All the issues dealt with in ‘Pattabhiraman’ are relevant. Food adulteration is a global phenomenon, but its incidence is higher in our country. During the entire period of growing a crop and to the time it reaches the customer as a food product, pesticides are used. This is another trigger for cancer,” says the doctor.
Earlier, Kerala’s Minister for Food P Thilothaman too had praised ‘Pattabhiraman’ directed by Kannan Thamarakulam. “The film’s theme touches the issues dealt with by the Food Ministry and Food Safety Department. The government will focus on these matters and adopt suitable measures,” he said.
