A four-and-half-year-old girl who complained of severe stomach pain was diagnosed with ovarian torsion, a gynaecological condition that is rarely seen in children. The girl, a native of Punnathara in Kottayam, underwent an emergency surgical procedure at the Caritas Hospital.
Pediatrician Dr. Sunu John had found a lump in one of the ovaries of the kid. However, such lumps do not cause severe stomach pain. So, gynecologist Dr. KM Babu did a scan of the kid’s ovaries which revealed ovarian torsion that is very rarely seen in children. In a simple keyhole surgery, the doctors could effectively cure the condition by retaining the ovaries.
Ovarian torsion is a condition that occurs when an ovary twists around the ligaments that hold it in place. This twisting can cut off the blood flow to the ovaries and the fallopian tube which leads to severe stomach ache or destruction of the ovaries. If not diagnosed and treated, this may lead to the death of the patient.
Anesthesiologists Dr. Bulbul Susan Jacob and Dr. Jasmine Joseph too were part of the team that did the surgical procedure.
