How to care for the elderly after hip replacement surgery

elderly health
If the elderly patient isn’t encouraged to walk again after hip replacement surgery, there is a chance that he or she might be bedridden which would then lead to other complications.

Most people worry whether their old parents who have had a hip replacement or joint surgery would fracture their bones when they start walking again. However, the truth is that if the patient isn’t encouraged to walk again, there is a chance that he or she might be bedridden which would then lead to bed sores and aspiration pneumonia.

Surgeries like these are often prescribed to improve the quality of life of old people. So, in order to fulfil the purpose of such a complex surgery, the patient should walk after recovering.

They will gain confidence only when they start walking and do things on their own. You could even seek the help of a physiotherapist. Exercise should be made part of his life.

A walking stick could be used if the physiotherapist suggests using it. After reaching home, make the aged parent sit up while feeding him or her. Besides, you could encourage her to eat using her hands. You could help her wake up at a particular time. Engaging in activities like reading the newspaper would help her relax.

It is not advisable to take afternoon naps as it would disrupt sleep at night. Ensure that the elderly person does not have constipation. Providing a nutritious diet is significant during the recovery period.
