Many people begin their day by drinking a glass of warm water on an empty stomach. Some of them continue drinking lukewarm water throughout the day as well. Water keeps our body hydrated, reduces body weight and expels toxins. However, does drinking lukewarm water have any additional health benefits? On World Water Day, we explore this habit.

Experts say drinking enough water proportionate to your body weight keeps away constipation, eases the digestive process and reduces stress. But, doctors warn that too much lukewarm water in our body can affect the immunity system. It can also destroy the tissues in the oesophagus and burn the taste buds on the tongue. If you drink excessive amounts of lukewarm water during meals, it can potentially dilute stomach acid and cause improper digestion.

If your water is not replenished with enough electrolytes, it can also potentially lead to an electrolyte imbalance. This is more likely to occur with extreme overconsumption, such as drinking several litres of water in a short period. There is also the risk of hyponatremia, a condition where the sodium levels in your blood become too diluted. However, this is more commonly associated with excessive water intake in a short period, such as in endurance sports, rather than moderate consumption throughout the day.

How to drink lukewarm water?
You can start your day with a glass of lukewarm water, adding a squeeze of lemon to it. It will aid digestion and also give you the benefits of vitamin C. It's also important to pay attention to your body's signals and drink lukewarm water when you feel thirsty or need hydration. Drinking lukewarm water in moderation throughout the day is the right way to go. An electrolyte-rich meal should also accompany your water intake for proper results. Also, note that individual hydration needs can vary based on factors such as age, weight, activity level, and climate. Adjust your water intake accordingly. You can also try replacing high-calorie foods with lukewarm water.
