Colon cancer is the fourth most common type of cancer that is seen in both men and women. A recent study conducted at the UConn School of Medicine revealed that eating walnuts regularly will significantly reduce the risk of colon cancer. The polyphenols called ellagitannins in walnuts are responsible for this property. The ellagitannins that get digested in the intestine then turn into urolithins that have anti-inflammatory qualities. The researchers explained that these compounds have the ability to fight many diseases, including cancer.

The study was conducted on 39 participants between 40 and 65. They had a high risk of colon cancer due to various reasons. They followed a diet in which walnuts were included for three weeks. They were then subjected to a few lab tests as well as a colonoscopy. The researchers observed that the peptide YY protein, which suppresses colorectal cancer, was high in those who showed high levels of urolithin A.

Walnuts are a great source of protein, fibre, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B6, vitamin E, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, and copper manganese. They also contain various types of antioxidants and phytochemicals. Walnuts are considered a superfood for ensuring the health of the brain, bones, gut, and heart.
