National Safety Day is celebrated every year on March 4th marking the beginning of National Safety Week, which runs till March 10. National Safety Day is aimed to remind and reinforce the importance of safety and promote a culture of accident prevention. The day envisages training programmes, awareness campaigns and activities intended to prevent hazardous incidents.
It was in 1972 that National Safety Day was first observed to commemorate the founding day of the National Safety Council of India (NSC), which was established in 1966 by the Ministry of Labour and Employment. The ambition was to create awareness about industrial safety and reduce accidents in factories, construction sites, other hazardous work environments and ensure a safer future for everyone.
Road safety, fire safety, environmental protection, and personal well-being are also being focussed now on National Safety Day. The day impels organisations to adopt measures like conducting safety drills, regulations and adopting precautionary steps. On this day individuals are educated about the importance of safety in everyday life, including fire hazards, road safety, and home safety.
Industrial safety measures are also encouraged in this campaign aiming to bring down occupational hazards and workplace accidents in factories, construction sites or office premises. This year's national safety day theme is 'Safety and Well-Being Crucial for Viksit Bharat'
As regards environmental protection, the observation of the day raises awareness of pollution control, waste management, sustainable development practices, eradication of hazardous materials and so on. Ensuring road safety, which includes, adherence to traffic rules, preventing rash or negligent driving, etc. is also part of the safety campaign programme. National Safety Day has been trending lately on Google.
