Kottarakara: Krishnamma, 97, sat for her first exam on Sunday morning. She is one among the several adults who are enrolled for the Kerala Literacy Mission's education programme.

Krishnamma is officially 92, but argues that was wrongly provided in her Aadhar card.

Krishnamma, a resident of Pezhumvila house at Thrikkannamangal, recalls that she could not study when she was a child, and did not have the facility for it when she became a mother. Age was no barrier for her as she decided to study after becoming a grandma.

The state Literacy Mission was there to lend a helping hand. After a six-month course, Krishnamma sat for the “Aksharalaksham” exam on Sunday morning.

C. Sheeja, the Mission's guide says Krishnamma is the senior-most student in Kollam district. She sat for the first exam in her life at Thrikkannamangal GLPS, along with 52 others at 10 am. Sheeja, a national award-winner, was the inspiration beind it all.

A total of 4,156 people took the exam on Sunday morning at different centres of Kollam district. Literacy Mission District Co-Ordinator C K Pradeepkumar said 40 marks are set for the written test out of a total of 100 while 30 each is for reading and maths.
