20 breastfeeding centres to be opened in Kannur soon

Kannur: Breastfeeding centres would be built at 20 places around the district. Initially, centres would be opened at district hospital, collectorate, civil station, district homeo hospital, Kottiyoor temple, Peralassery temple, Mridangasaileswari temple, Cherupuzha community health center, and the bus stands at Pazhayangadi, Pilathara, Irikkoor, Aalakkode, Anjarakandi, Peravoor, Cherupuzha, Chakkarakallu and Chalodu.

The district women's welfare officer would function as the executive officer of the project. The district panchayat has allotted Rs 60 lakh in its annual budget for the 'Ammakoridam' project which aims to provide safe, private and hygienic spaces for mothers to breastfeed their kids. Portable cabins would be erected which has electric supply, drinking water facilities and proper seating facilities.

If this project becomes successful, then more such centres would be built at various places. The authorities hope that the project would be a solution for one of the most important problems faced by mothers in public spaces. Bus stands and hospitals are mainly included in the project. Tourist spots and religious centres too are being considered to implement this project.
