Thrissur: Not just 'rajas,' even 'ranis' will now serve you at Indian Coffee House (ICH) outlets. Women will soon start to wait diners at the 61-year-old popular restaurant chain in the cooperative sector.

The radical change has been brought about with the death of an employee, Santosh Kumar, at its Thiruvananthapuram outlet. On his widow Sheena's plea, the principal secretary at Department of Industries wrote to the Indian Coffee House authorities seeking to consider appointing her.

The new governing council of the hotel chain, which will be elected on June 16, will consider the request.

A proposal on appointing women waitresses was sent to southern districts from Thrissur. Even women dependants will now be considered for a job. They were kept away since shifts extended up until 10 pm.

The uniform of the women staff will be chosen later.

The 'royal' hat, a popular part of the uniform, is expected to be included.

Coffee Houses in northern districts run by the ICH Kannur Society has six women kitchen staff. They will be allowed to serve once they get more experience at the job.
