Kumarakom: Jessy Mathew (50), a native of Kumarakom, has conquered Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. She was part of the 14 member team which successfully scaled the 5895 meters high Kilimanjaro peak in Tanzania. Daughter of Vattakulam Mathew and Eliyamma, Jessy has always been passionate about mountaineering.

Jessy was in fact one of the three Indians in the team that undertook this impressive feat. The team had trained hard for three months before climbing the highest mountain in the African continent.

The team began scaling the mountain on 31st August and reached the peak on 9th September. Though she had climbed many other mountains earlier, this was the first time that Jessy has climbed such a high peak.

Jessy has been working as a nurse in the United States for the last 30 years. The family had visited their home town in Kumarakom a year ago.
