Ambalappuzha: A 39-year-old woman, weighing 135kg, underwent a bariatric surgery at the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital.

Sreeja, 39, wife of Adoor native Suresh, had undergone the weight-loss surgery on Friday. She is said to be recovering well and is likely to be discharged from the hospital in the coming days.

This was the first bariatric surgery to be held at the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital.

The surgery that would have cost Rs 6 lakh at a private hospital was completed at one-fourth the amount at the medical college, superintendent Dr R V Ramlal said.
