Kozhikode tribal hamlet produces first doctor

Jyotsna battled the odds to become the first doctor from her tribal hamlet

Nadapuram: The small tribal hamlet at Vilangad in Kozhikode finally has a doctor to call its own. The daughter of a labourer has become the first doctor from the tribal hamlet.

Jyotsna battled against the odds to clear Plus-Two exams with good marks. She then joined for Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) course at the M V Raghavan Memorial Ayurveda Medical College & Hospital at Parassinikkadavu in Kannur district in 2014. After her results were out recently, the entire hamlet and even the Janamaithri police at Valayam area are rejoicing.

The cops had also played a role in Jyotsna's success. K P Suresh Babu and N C Kunjumol of the Janamaithri police had met Jyotsna during a visit to her colony in 2013. The then Nadapuram DySPs Prajeesh Thottathil and K Surendran as well as Valayam SI K Shambunath backed the initiative of the Janamaithri personnel to help Jyotsna in her further studies. Local people, including those from the colony, too gave her all the support.

The young Ayurvedic doctor is grateful to all those helped her along the way.

Jyotsna, the eldest daughter of daily wager Usha, plans to go for the three-year post-graduation course after completing internship.

Her siblings Jishnu and Jishna are students at the St George High School at Vilangad.
