Varkkala: This is the incredible tale of a gritty young woman who has proved that any crises or difficult predicaments in life could be overcome through sheer perseverance and hard work. Annie Shiva (31) who has been in the news lately for her inspiring life story has taken charge as the sub inspector at the police station in Varkala. Her experiences emphasize how important it is for women to attain proper education and training to succeed in life. Annie, who became a mother at a very young age, didn’t back off when life threw curveballs at her. She was just an 18 year graduate student at the Kanjiramkulam Government College when she decided to enter into a live in relationship with a classmate.

But that relationship didn’t last long and by then she had become a mother too. Annie went back home, with a newborn with her, in the hope of receiving support from her parents after witnessing her plight. But she was not welcome there as the family wasn’t ready to forgive her yet. She stayed in a small makeshift home close to the house of a relative, for a while. From there started her arduous fight to win back her life, by overcoming severe mental stress. With a baby, Annie moved houses quite a few times.

She did odd jobs to earn a living. She worked as a delivery agent and an insurance agent. Though she tried to catch up with life by selling ice-creams and lemonade on the wayside during the Sivagiri pilgrimage season, it didn’t work out as she had planned. However, Annie wasn’t ready to curse her fate or lose hope.

Meanwhile, the young woman, who was a graduate in sociology, joined a coaching centre to prepare for the government recruitment exams. It was during this time that she began cherishing the dream of donning the police uniform. Ten years later, Annie is posted as an SI at the same place where she had once sold ice-cream and lemonades.

“How else can I take revenge on my past?” writes Annie on her Facebook page after she was appointed as the SI here. Though she had written the SI test in 2014, it was the CPO test that she had passed first. She had worked for three years at the SAP camp before getting through the SI test in 2019. After completing her probation in Kochi, she was appointed as the sub inspector in Varkala. Annie stands out for her stylish pixie hair cut and her attitude exuding confidence. The young police officer says that she feels humbled, lending an ear to those who come to her station with complains and many other difficulties. Her only son Shiva Surya is a class seven student in Thiruvananthapuram.
