Tata Sierra
A few decades ago, Tata Sierra was considered as the ultimate SUV on Indian roads. In fact, it was the first SUV to be made in India. The vehicle that showed us what is an SUV is now 25 years old. Tata Safari
Tata Motors introduced the Safari as an SUV fully developed and built in the country. When it hit the roads in 1998, the India SUV market was nothing to write about. Though there has been a sea change in the SUV market in the past two decades, the Safari is still going strong. Its advertisements played a key role in popularising the SUV. Safari commercials always talked about reclaiming life lost in the day-to-day routine. Both the catchy commercials as well as the butch design played a crucial role in making it a popular SUV. Even today you can find SUV lovers who swear by the name of Safari. Close to two decades down the line, the SUV's popularity has refused to die down.
Maruti Suzuki Gypsy
The SUV that is based on Suzuki's Jimny has been available in India for the past 30 years. Trusted by the police and the Army, the Gypsy is also a favourite among off-roading enthusiasts. The Gypsy first came to India in 1985. Available only in a petrol engine, the Gypsy is the king of off-roading in the country. Though it was never a hot selling product, the Gypsy is still a name to reckon with among car lovers.
Mahindra Scorpio
Scorpio can claim credit for changing the fortunes for a vehicle manufacturer. Scorpio is the vehicle that made Mahindra the largest utility vehicle maker of India. The SUV was launched in 2002 and 17 years later it is still a favourite among Indians. Not just India, Scorpio is sold in several foreign countries. Though the Scorpio is now in its third generation, nothing much has changed in terms of its butch looks.
Mahindra Bolero
The Bolero is India's largest selling utility vehicle. It was launched in the small utility vehicle category. Based on Mahindra's Armada, it quickly became popular with its rugged SUV looks and lesser price tag. Offering almost car-like travel comfort and available at the price of a car, the seven-seater is extremely popular in both urban and rural parts of the country.
