Thiruvananthapuram: All varieties of Milma milk will be dearer by Rs 4 a litre from September 21. The decision was taken in a meeting headed by Minister K Raju. Milma wanted a Rs 7 hike, with 80% going to farmers. However, Rs 3.35, or 83.75 per cent of the rise, will go to farmers now.
Rise in production cost for dairy farmers necessitated the rise in milk price, said minister Raju. When Tamil Nadu raised price by Rs 6, farmers received only 66.67 per cent of it. 0.25 per cent of the new margin will go towards Green Kerala Initiative, aimed at reducing plastic use. Four per cent each go to milk cooperative societies and distribution agencies, 0.75% will be kept aside towards dairy farmers’ fund.
Milk costs Rs 46 a litre at government farms already. Milma last hiked prices in February 2017.
