Self-destructing messages: WhatsApp tests new feature

A new feature in the works at WhatsApp will allow you to set your messages to self-destruct after a set period of time. The new 'disappearing messages' feature first appeared in version 2.19.275 of the Android app, but it may not be available to everyone on the beta just yet.

With so many sensitive information being sent on WhatsApp, the feature comes as a welcome relief to many who do the 'self-destruct' procedure manually, and also in keeping with the focus the platform's being giving to privacy.

The feature was previously popular with the messaging app Telegram. Gmail also added a similar feature in the latest redesign.

The feature is still in early development and it would be a while before we see the full extent of it. In its current form, WhatsApp lets you set messages to delete after either 5 seconds or an hour. The feature is only currently available in group chats.

The promise of a bit more security and privacy is always welcome in the world's most popular messaging app.
