Hitesh Oberoi once confessed that he opted for an MBA after completing his BTech because he was bad at Computer Science, the subject he was forced to pick at IIT Delhi out of peer pressure.

His decision to join the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore proved right as the management lessons he pursued at the premier institute apparently helped him climb up the country’s corporate ladder even as exploring opportunities in a freshly opened economy.

At 53, Oberoi is a co-promoter, MD and CEO of Info Edge India Limited, the parent company of the country's leading job site, Naukri.com. Info Edge also owns leading internet entities such as 99acres.com, Jeevansathi.com, and Shiksha.com. It has investments in various startups, including Zomato and PolicyBazaar. According to the Hurun India 2024 list, Oberoi is the richest person in Noida, with a net worth of Rs 7,600 crore.

All smiles and joyful, Oberoi is someone who believes ‘building a company is not a sprint, but a marathon’. He believes one cannot expect to be successful overnight. When it comes to building a business, he has sort of a classic approach where he values the combination of a unique idea and action, going by his 2019 TedTalk.

However, he says they are not enough. He believes a set of qualities such as determination, tenacity, persistence, vision and ambition –which he identifies as ‘drive’ -- is very important to build a business. His advice to start-ups and entrepreneurs is that it is crucial to generate revenue from customers rather than relying solely on investors.

With over 24 years of experience in the internet industry, he is part of various forums in the booming sector. He is a board member of the TiE, New Delhi and also the past chairman of the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IMAI). He is also one of the founders and trustees of Ashoka University and the newly set up Plaksha University.

He won the prestigious Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for Business Transformation in 2008 along with his partner. He has also been awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award of 2019 by IIM Bangalore and the Distinguished Alumnus Award of 2021 by IIT Delhi. Oberoi will be sharing his experiences and insights from his eventful career at the Manorama Online Techspectation.
