Chennai: A man was arrested after the police found spy cameras in six places, including the bathroom, at a women’s hostel he ran at Adambakkam near here.

Sampath Raj, 48, was taken into custody after five women occupants, who are IT professionals, lodged a complaint with the police.

Sampath Raj, a native of Tiruchirappalli, opened the hostel at Thillai Ganga Nagar two months ago, and placed advertisements about the facility on the Facebook page ‘Flats and Flat mates’, the police said.

The issue surfaced following a glitch in the hair dryer electrical socket, and on closer examination the occupants found a spy camera inside the socket. They immediately lodged a complaint with the Adambakkam police, and police found spy cameras installed in many places, including the bedrooms.

Police said that Sampath Raj used to visit the rooms on the pretext of examining the rooms, and might have placed the cameras at hidden points during these visits. Police also seized 17 cell phones from his residence. Probe is on and the police are finding out if other persons are involved in the crime.
