Transgender candidate alleges abuse by cops

Kochi: A transgender candidate who is in the fray from the Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency has alleged verbal abuse by police. A complaint has been registered with the Election Commission.

The complainant is Chinchu Aswathy, alias Aswathy Rajappan.

The plaint seeks action against policemen for abuse with reference to ones gender, Dalit identity and complexion. Complaints will be sent to chief minister and human rights panel too, Chinchu said.

The alleged incident happened as Chinchu was returning from campaign work at night on April 14.

Chinchu was returning to his lodge after sticking posters when his autorickshaw was stopped by policemen who arrived in two jeeps.

They showered abuses and issued threats, the complaint to the Commission and district collector says.

Aswathy is reportedly the first transgender from Kerala to contest to Lok Sabha elections.
