Kannur: Bombs were hurled at the houses of a Congress booth agent and a woman who had exposed bogus votes at a booth here when Lok Sabha elections were held in Kerala on April 23.

KJ Shalat was in the news last month when she was pictured waiting at the Pilathara UP School booth no 19 poll after it was found that someone else had cast her vote.

Repolling was declared here over this on Sunday and she cast vote without any trouble this time.

A bomb exploded in front of Shalat’s house on Sunday evening soon after the repoll concluded. CPM workers had created ruckus as Shalat spoke to media after voting.

The police helped her return home safe.

Soon after midnight, bombs were also thrown at the house of VTV Padmanabhan, a Congress polling booth agent, at Puthur, Pilathara.

Windows of the house were broken in the blast that occurred at 12.20 at night. Walls too have suffered damage.

Padmanabhan was on duty at booth 19 that falls under Kasaragod Lok Sabha constituency.

Congress leaders alleged CPM had unleashed the attacks fearing electoral reverses as is widely suggested by the exit polls.

Lower turnout

Meanwhile, lower voter turnout was recorded in seven booths that went for repoll in Kannur and Kasaragod Lok Sabha constituencies following reports of bogus voting when elections were held last month. Election officers asked women with face veils to remove them for proper identification. All of them cooperated with it.

Padmini and Shyamkumar, who were earlier booked for bogus votes, voted at Pilathara and Kooliyadu booths respectively.

A faulty voting machine created delays at Pamburuthy booth. Discrepancy in votes cast and votes registered was observed.
