Mumbai: Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan underwent emergency surgery on Thursday to remove a knife lodged in his spine following an attack by an intruder at his Mumbai residence. Doctors have confirmed that Khan, 54, is now out of danger and recovering at Lilavati Hospital.

The incident occurred around 2.30 am at Khan’s home in the ‘Satguru Sharan’ building. After being rushed to the hospital, he underwent a complex operation to remove a 2.5-inch piece of knife from his thoracic spine.

“We successfully removed the knife from the spine. The surgery went very well, and he is on the path to recovery,” said Dr Niraj Uttamani, Chief Operating Officer at Lilavati Hospital.

Dr Uttamani detailed the injuries, stating there were two severe wounds, two intermediate ones, and two abrasions. In addition to neurosurgery, plastic surgery was performed to repair injuries on Khan’s left hand and neck.

Dr Nitin Dange, a neurosurgeon at the hospital, described the severity of the injuries. “The knife caused significant damage to the thoracic spine, including a leak in the spinal fluid, which we repaired during surgery. The other wounds were managed by the plastic surgery team,” he said.

Khan remains in stable condition and has been moved to the ICU for observation. “He’s recovering well and is completely out of danger. We expect to shift him to the ward by tomorrow morning and possibly discharge him within a couple of days,” Dr Dange added.
