Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Sunday launched the‘White T-shirt Movement’, a campaign aimed at championing economic justice, social equality and the rights of marginalised groups. Announcing the movement on social media platform X, Gandhi invited citizens to don white T-shirts as a symbol of solidarity and join the fight against inequality and discrimination.
"If you believe in economic justice, oppose rising wealth inequalities, fight for social equality, reject all forms of discrimination, and strive for peace and stability in our country, wear your white T-shirts and join the movement," urged a video voiceover accompanying Gandhi’s post.
A call to action
Gandhi criticised the Modi government, accusing it of prioritising the interests of a few capitalists while neglecting the poor and the working class. He said rising inequality and worsening conditions for workers demand a collective response.
"In such a situation, it is the responsibility of all of us to raise our voice strongly to get them justice and rights. With this thought, we are starting the #WhiteTshirtMovement," Gandhi said on X, urging youth and workers to participate.
The campaign encourages people to visit its website, [whitetshirt.in](https://whitetshirt.in/home/hin), or give a missed call on 9999812024 to join the initiative.
Symbolism of the white t-shirt
According to the movement's website, the white T-shirt is more than a garment; it symbolises five guiding principles: compassion, unity, non-violence, equality, and progress. These values, rooted in India’s 8,000-year-old civilisation, represent the harmony and diversity that define the country.
"Growing inequalities rooted in income, caste, and religion demand action beyond ideology. Our commitment must stem from the philosophy of Dharma and Karma—Dharma being the duty to selflessly serve society, while Karma is the resolve to uphold rights and fight for justice," the message reads.
The movement builds on the spirit of Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, which aimed to bridge social and economic divides. "The white T-shirt is our symbol—a call for a just and unified India," the website states. "By wearing it, we honour the spirit of Bharat Jodo and commit to creating a cohesive, equitable nation."
