Chandigarh: Haryana police have registered a case against AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in connection with his recent statement about "poison in Yamuna." The FIR was lodged at Shahabad police station based on a complaint by local advocate Jagmohan Manchanda. The development comes just a day before the Delhi Assembly elections.

The FIR names Kejriwal, the former Delhi chief minister, along with unidentified AAP members. The BJP has strongly criticised him for his remark, accusing him of spreading panic among the people of Delhi and Haryana with misleading claims. Saffron party leaders slammed his comments as "irresponsible" and an attempt to create fear.

The case was registered under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 192 (provoking others with the intent to incite a riot), 196(1) (promoting enmity between different communities based on religion or race), and 299 (deliberate acts intended to insult religious sentiments), reported PTI.

The complainant alleged that Kejriwal’s statements were inflammatory and falsely accused both the Haryana government and the BJP of wrongdoing. According to Manchanda, the AAP leader, in coordination with other party members, made these "false and misleading" remarks with the intent to create chaos in Delhi and Haryana, potentially influencing voters.

The complaint further stated that Kejriwal "deliberately, intentionally, and consciously" made these accusations. The case was registered following an order from the sub-divisional judicial magistrate's court in Shahabad.

Earlier, the AAP had accused the BJP-led Haryana government of deliberately allowing industrial waste to contaminate the Yamuna. Kejriwal had alleged that this was an attempt to harm people by "mixing poison" in the river. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi had also accused the BJP of "deliberately disrupting" the capital's water supply, asserting that the party feared a "historic loss" in the upcoming February 5 elections.

Kejriwal, in a post on X, accused the BJP of deliberately cutting off Delhi’s water supply for political gains. He stated, "BJP people in Haryana are mixing poison in the water and sending it to Delhi. If people in Delhi drink this water, many will die. Can anything be more disgusting than this?" He further claimed that the contamination was so severe that "the poison that is being mixed in the water cannot even be cleaned in water treatment plants." According to him, water supply in several areas had to be halted to ensure public safety.
