1. A US military plane carrying illegal Indian immigrants landed in Amritsar on Wednesday, deporting an unspecified number of people as part of President Donald Trump's immigration agenda. Certain local media channels reported that the flight was bringing 205 people back, while others put the number at 104 and that they were mainly from the state of Punjab.
Although illegal Indian immigrants have been deported home by previous US administrations, it is the first time Washington has used a military aircraft for the purpose. It is also the farthest destination so far for such flights using a military aircraft.

2. Days after the Union Budget, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) started deliberations on the monetary policy on Wednesday amid expectations of a 25 basis-points rate cut. If the apex banks goes through with the cut, it will be the first in five years.
The Reserve Bank had last reduced the repo rate by 40 basis points to 4 per cent in May 2020 to help the economy tide over the crisis following the Covid pandemic and subsequent lockdown.
Monetary Policy Committee is chaired by the newly appointed RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra. The decision of the six-member panel will be announced on Friday, February 7.

3. US President Donald Trump said the country would take over war-ravaged Gaza and create a 'Riviera of the Middle East' after resettling Palestinians elsewhere.  
The shock move from Trump was swiftly condemned by regional heavyweight Saudi Arabia, which Trump hopes will establish ties with Israel. 
Trump, in his first major Middle East policy announcement, said he envisioned building a resort where international communities could live in harmony. The casual proposal sent diplomatic shockwaves across the Middle East and around the globe. China said it opposed the forced transfer of Palestinians and Turkey called the proposal "unacceptable".

4. 11 people were dead following a mass shooting at Campus Ris-berg-ska in Sweden on Tuesday afternoon. The dead also includes a 35-year-old suspect, whom police say acted alone and has no prior criminal record.  Sweden is observing a national period of mourning with flags at half-staff following the incident. The police have also ruled out the possibility of terrorism.

5. The Kerala High Court on Wednesday stayed the re-admission of 18 students booked in the suicide of JS Sidharthan, a second-year student at the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Wayanad’s Pookode. As per the case, Sidharthan died by suicide on February 18, 2024, after facing a brutal assault at the college hostel. The 18 students are facing charges, including abetment to suicide, ragging in the case.
