Tara Murali, noted architect and wife of N Murali, Director of The Hindu Group of Publications and President of The Music Academy, passed away at her residence in Chennai on Saturday evening, July 26. She was 75 and had been unwell for some time.

She is survived by her husband, son Krishna Murali, daughter Kanta Murali, three grandchildren, and her elder brother Ramesh Pattabhiraman.

A graduate in architecture from the University of Madras' School of Architecture and Planning, Tara Murali completed her early education at Sacred Heart Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Church Park, and pursued pre-university studies at Stella Maris College. Over four decades, she built a thriving architectural practice and actively engaged in urban planning, heritage conservation, and consumer rights.

She championed several public causes, including the preservation of the Palani Hills and the protection of iconic Chennai landmarks like the DGP's office and Queen Mary’s College. Known for her secular and progressive values, she had a wide range of interests spanning music, literature, environmental issues, and civic activism.

Tara Murali was a Trustee of the Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group (CAG), served on the Broadcast Complaints Council and the governing council of INTACH, and was active in literary circles. She also headed the Tamil Nadu Table Tennis Association and the Table Tennis Players Welfare Association. She translated Ma Po Sivagnanam's Tamil work on freedom fighter Veerapandiya Kattabomman into English.

She was cremated at the Besant Nagar crematorium on Monday, July 28.
