The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted above-normal rain for most parts of the country in August. Speaking at an online press briefing on Thursday, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said most regions across the country are likely to receive normal rainfall in August, except for the northeast and adjoining parts of eastern India.

He added that rainfall in September is expected to be above normal. “Overall, above normal rainfall (106 per cent of the long period average of 422.8 mm) is most likely over the country during the second half of the southwest monsoon season,” Mohapatra said.

He further noted, “Geographically, normal to above-normal rainfall is most likely over most parts of the country except many parts of the northeast and the adjoining areas of east India, some isolated regions of central India and southwestern parts of peninsular India where below normal rainfall is likely.” India had already recorded above-normal rainfall during the first half of the monsoon season—June and July—with states like Himachal Pradesh reporting flash floods as a result.
