Seven people were killed and one injured when a wall collapsed near Mohan Baba Mandir in Jaitpur, Delhi, amid heavy rainfall on Saturday morning. The victims included three men, two women, and two minor girls. The injured man, identified as 27 year old Hasibul from Murshidabad, West Bengal, is receiving treatment at Safdarjung Hospital’s trauma centre, reports PTI.
The incident occurred after continuous downpours since Friday night. Police received the first distress call at 9.13 am, reporting a “big wall” collapse with several people trapped. The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) dispatched three fire tenders alongside police teams.
Rescue operations began immediately, led by the Jaitpur Station House Officer and supported by Additional DCP (South-East) Aishwarya Sharma and ACP Ravishankar. Eight people were pulled from the debris and taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre and Safdarjung Hospital. Despite efforts, seven succumbed to their injuries.
A joint search by the DFS and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams confirmed no additional victims remained trapped. Authorities suspect waterlogging and soil weakening from overnight rainfall may have caused the collapse.
Police are registering a case under the appropriate sections of law, reports PTI. Investigations will examine the structural integrity of the wall, its ownership, and any negligence involved.
