Mumbai: A 71-year-old woman from Wadala lost ₹18.5 lakh after clicking on a fraudulent link while trying to order a litre of milk online, police said on Saturday. The victim allegedly lost her life savings across three bank accounts within two days earlier this month, reported PTI.
According to officials, she had contacted an online delivery app on August 4 to place an order. She then received a call from a man identifying himself as “Deepak,” who claimed to be an executive of the milk company. He sent her a link and instructed her to fill in her details without disconnecting the call.
The call lasted over an hour, after which she hung up. The next day, the accused called again and obtained additional information. Days later, during a routine bank visit, the woman discovered that ₹1.7 lakh had been withdrawn from one account. Further checks revealed her other two accounts had also been emptied, bringing the total loss to ₹18.5 lakh.
Investigators believe the accused gained remote access to her phone after she clicked the link. A case has been registered, and police have launched a probe into the cyber fraud.
