New Delhi: In a significant display of its strategic military capabilities, India on Wednesday successfully test-fired the Agni-5 intermediate-range ballistic missile, which has a strike range of up to 5,000 km. The missile was launched from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha.

According to the Defence Ministry, the test validated all operational and technical parameters. “Intermediate-range ballistic missile Agni-5 was successfully test-fired from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur in Odisha on August 20,” the ministry said. “The launch validated all operational and technical parameters. It was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command,” the statement added.

The Agni-5 missile is capable of striking nearly the entire Asian continent, including the northernmost regions of China, as well as parts of Europe. The test comes approximately three-and-a-half months after a brief military conflict between India and Pakistan, underlining India’s intent to further strengthen its strategic deterrence.

India last test-fired the Agni-5 missile in March 2024. The country’s missile arsenal also includes Agni-1 to Agni-4, with strike ranges varying from 700 km to 3,500 km. All these missiles have already been inducted into service.
