Amaravati: Six Class 5 students, including a girl, drowned in a pond at Chigeli village in Kurnool district’s Aspari mandal on Wednesday.

The children, all aged around 10–11 years, had gone to the pond after school to bathe, reported IANS. Seven children had visited the spot, but six entered the water. As the pond was filled from recent rains, they began drowning and, in attempting to save one another, all six lost their lives. The lone survivor rushed back to the village and raised an alarm.

Villagers reached the pond and pulled out the children, but all were found dead. Police registered a case and launched an investigation. Officials said the children had attended school in the morning before heading to the pond instead of returning home.

Minister for Roads and Buildings B C Janardhan Reddy expressed shock over the tragedy, conveying condolences to the bereaved families and urging parents to monitor their children’s movements closely.
