Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Saturday initiated the takeover of 215 schools associated with the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its affiliate, the Falah-e-Aam Trust, officials said. Teams from district administrations, accompanied by police and principals of nearby higher secondary schools, visited these institutions across the Valley in the morning to assume their management.
The move follows an order issued by the School Education Department on Friday directing the transfer of control of schools linked to the proscribed organisations.
“The managing committees of these schools shall be taken over by the respective District Magistrates/Deputy Commissioners, who will later propose new committees after due verification,” the order stated.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs had declared Jamaat-e-Islami an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on February 28, 2019, and renewed the ban on February 27, 2024.
According to the order, intelligence inputs revealed that several schools were either directly or indirectly affiliated with JeI and its trust. The managing committees of these schools had also been flagged adversely by agencies, and their validity had lapsed.
Officials said the takeover aims to safeguard the academic interests of thousands of students enrolled in these institutions. District Magistrates have been asked to coordinate with the School Education Department to ensure classes continue without disruption.
