New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday registered a suo motu case over the absence of functional CCTV cameras in police stations across the country.

The action was initiated by a bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta after taking note of a Dainik Bhaskar report that highlighted 11 custodial deaths in the past seven to eight months.

In its 2020 judgment in Paramvir Singh Saini v Baljit Singh, the court had directed all States and Union Territories to install CCTV cameras in every police station. Despite the order, compliance remains incomplete, with several stations lacking cameras or operating with faulty equipment.
