Churachandpur: A mob clashed with security forces in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Sunday, demanding the release of two youths arrested for allegedly vandalising banners and cutouts put up ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit.
On the night of September 11, several banners and cutouts at Pearsonmun and Phailien Bazaar were vandalised. Police detained several youths for questioning and later released them, but two were formally arrested.
Protesters gathered near the Churachandpur police station on Sunday, seeking their release. The demonstration escalated into a clash, with the mob pelting stones at security personnel. Police said efforts were underway to bring the situation under control.
Prime Minister Modi visited Churachandpur on Saturday, his first trip to Manipur since ethnic clashes between Kukis and Meiteis broke out in May 2023. He addressed a public rally, vowing to make the state a “symbol of peace,” met violence-affected residents, and unveiled several development projects.
