New Delhi: The Bar Council of India has suspended Advocate Rakesh Kishore from practice for attempting to hurl a shoe at Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai, during the morning session of the Supreme Court on Monday.

The incident briefly interrupted the session, but it resumed after the security personnel quickly escorted the lawyer out of the courtroom.

"On the basis of prima facie material, it appears that at about 11.35 am on October 6, 2025, in Court No 1 of the Supreme Court of India, Advocate Rakesh Kishore, enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi, removed sports shoes and attempted to hurl them towards the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India during ongoing proceedings......... In view of the foregoing, Advocate Rakesh Kishore is suspended from practice with immediate effect," according to an order issued by the BCI.

The lawyers present during the incident said that Rakesh shouted, "Sanatan Dharam ka apmaan nahi sahega Hindustan" ("India will not tolerate disrespect towards Sanatan Dharma") as he was being taken out of the courtroom.

Following the incident, Chief Justice Gavai continued with the day's proceedings and maintained composure. The CJI remarked, "Don't get distracted. We are not distracted by this," as he requested the next lawyer to make submissions.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condemned the incident, attributing it to the communal propaganda spearheaded by the Sangh Parivar. He said that such mindsets drive people to commit dangerous acts such as these even at the highest levels of the court, drawing parallels with the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.
