New Delhi: Actor-Politician Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, on Wednesday moved to the Supreme Court, challenging the Madras High Court order favouring the constitution of an SIT to investigate the Karur stampede that resulted in 41 deaths and several injuries.

The plea was filed by a lawyer, through TVK's secretary Aadhav Arjuna. A bench comprising Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran noted that it be listed for hearing, PTI reported.

On Tuesday, the bench agreed to hear the plea filed by BJP leader Uma Anandan, challenging the high court's order refusing a CBI probe into the Karur stampede on October 10. The CJI agreed to hear the instant plea on Friday, along with the other petition.

The TVK contended that a fair and impartial probe would not be possible if conducted solely by officers of the Tamil Nadu police, and therefore sought an independent investigation under the supervision of the Supreme Court.

The stampede had led to 41 deaths and left more than 60 people injured. The police noted that the rally turnout of 27,000 was nearly thrice the expected 10,000 participants. The police also attributed it to Vijay's seven-hour delay in reaching the venue.
