Bengaluru: A 27-year-old man was arrested by the CID on Wednesday following a probe into allegations of vote theft in the Aland segment during the 2023 Karnataka assembly polls, sources in the department said on Friday.

The accused, Bapi Adya, a native of Nadia, West Bengal, was tracked down through a money trail leading to his bank account and brought to Bengaluru after his arrest. The CID has taken him into its custody for interrogation.

He had applied to have many votes deleted in the Aland constituency, sources said. According to Aland Congress MLA B R Patil, most of the requests were made to delete minority and backward caste votes.

After learning of irregular requests to delete voters' names following a complaint lodged by Minister Priyank Kharge and Patil, the Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer ordered a status quo.

Patil won the elections by a margin of 10,000 votes.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi held a press conference on September 18, highlighting the 'Vote Chori' (vote theft) allegation and slamming the Election Commission for shielding the accused by failing to investigate the matter.
