Mangaluru: A man was killed in a stray dog attack at Ullal, a village on the Mangaluru–Kasaragod border, on Friday morning. Though police initially suspected murder, forensic examination has confirmed that he died due to an animal attack. According to police, victim's eye had been eaten by the dog. Officers also spotted a dog with bloodstains wandering near the spot where the man was found lying in a pool of blood.

The deceased is Dayananda, approximately 60 years old, police said. He had sustained multiple deep bite wounds.

Residents said he was a homeless man who used to sleep in front of a shop at Ullal. It is suspected that the dog attacked him while he was sleeping. Though he tried to escape, the dog reportedly chased and mauled him to death. His body has been shifted to the hospital for post-mortem.

The dog was later captured and sent to an animal care centre at Shakthinagar.
