The Supreme Court will hear the petition moved by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Friday. Advocate Haris Beeran mentioned the petition filed by the Indian Union Muslim League before the Chief Justice of India for urgent listing. He submitted that the local body elections are underway in Kerala, and conducting the SIR simultaneously will lead to practical difficulties.

The Kerala government has also approached the apex court against the SIR, claiming the exercise would cripple the administration ahead of the local body polls.

While the IUML's petition challenges the notification issued to conduct SIR and seeks a stay of the process, citing the local body elections, the state government has sought only a postponement of the process.
