Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday stated that singer Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore was "plain and simple murder".
Speaking in the state assembly, he said the special investigation team (SIT), which has been probing the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death, had already invoked murder charges in the case.
Sarma made these remarks during a discussion taken up under an adjournment motion initiated by the opposition, which the Speaker allowed at the chief minister’s request.
Sarma said the initial investigation convinced the police that the incident did not amount to culpable homicide. “After preliminary probe, the Assam Police was sure that it was not a case of culpable homicide, but it was a plain and simple murder,” he said. He added that section 103 of the BNS had been incorporated within three days of the singer’s death.
According to the chief minister, the SIT led by the CID of the state police has so far detained seven individuals, examined 252 witnesses and seized 29 items in connection with the case. He alleged that one of the accused directly killed Garg while others assisted. “Four to five people are being booked in the murder case,” he said.
Sarma further noted that once the chargesheet is filed in December, investigators will expand the scope of the inquiry to examine possible negligence, criminal breach of trust and other offences. He maintained that the SIT intends to submit a “watertight chargesheet, and the motive behind the crime will shock the people of the state.” Garg died while swimming in the sea in Singapore on September 19.
