Kottayam: A first cousin of Sunil, the goldsmith who took his life along with his wife Tuesday night after the police brutalized him at the Changanassery police station, narrates the incidents of the day of horror. Anil recalls that Sunil was called to the station on a complaint of missing ornaments filed by local CPM leader Sajikumar, who runs a jewellery where the youth was employed.

“The police have almost beaten me to death. They will beat me up again next time. We are going to die,” Sunil told his aunt's son on the phone. When a scared Anil called Sajikumar, the response was that it's all Sunil's joke.

Sunil had told him that Changanassery police has summoned him to the station. He wasn't clear whose complaint it was and what the issue was.

“We used to live together,” Anil, also a goldsmith, said. Sunil and Reshma started living in another house hardly a month ago.

“He called me at around 9.30 on Monday night. He said the police had summoned him to the station at 9.00 on Tuesday morning. He wasn't sure what the complaint was.

“Sunil and Reshma reached Sajikumar's house at first Tuesday morning. He says Sajikumar told him not to worry and go to the station.

“Sunil and Reshma went to the station. Reshma called me around noon.

“I was in Thrissur then. As I returned and reached the station, I found Sajukumar also there, besides Sunil and his colleague Rajesh from Chengannur.

“I enquired with Sajikumar. He told me not to intervene because it's a case about gold.

“Sajikumar also threatened that Sunil will leave the station in a disabled condition if he doesn't get the gold back.

“Sunil called me at around 9.00 Tuesday night. I remember Sunil telling me the police thrashed him brutally. I asked him to return home.

“Sunil was weeping when he said the police beat him counting a bangle for every punch. Finally he was let off after he was forced to give a written undertaking that he would give Rs 8 lakhs by Wednesday evening.

“I pacified them and sent them back, assuring them that I will talk to Saji and sort out the issue.

“But a little while later, after reaching his home, Sunil called to say he will end his life. I was scared and rushed to his house after cutting the call. I found the door of the house open. As I rushed inside, I found both of them lying in a near-death state on the bed.”

The police filed a case on Sunil's death based on Anil's complaint.
