Kochi: In a major breakthrough in the Abhimanyu murder case, the police on Saturday apprehended a person who likely brought the murder weapon to the Maharaja's College campus where the crime happened nearly a month ago.
According to the police, one Saneesh, who brought the knife, had himself drawn it on Abhimanyu. However, his confession that two others from his group also had knives with them has confounded the cops, who are trying to zero in on the person who stabbed the Students Federation of India (SFI) leader at midnight.
The police on Thursday had detained Muhammad Rifa, one of the main accused in the case. Rifa, a native of Kannur, was picked up from Bengaluru. He was absconding after the murder of Abhimanyu late night on July 1.
An LLB student in Kochi, Rifa is a state-level leader of the the Campus Front, the students' wing of the Popular Front of India.
J I Muhammed, another Campus Front leader in the college, also was arrested recently. Muhammed, who is a third-year BA Arabic student, allegedly organised the gang of 15 to 17 men comprising activists of the Popular Front of India (PFI), its political offshoot SDPI and Campus Front, to attack SFI activists on the college campus.
While Abhimanyu was stabbed to death, two other SFI activists suffered grievous injuries in the attack allegedly using sharp-edged weapons. The murder followed a dispute over a painting a graffiti on the campus walls.
