Idukki: After 26 years, the shutters of the Idukki reservoir were opened on Thursday. The dam was last opened in October, 1992.

The shutters of the Cheruthoni dam, one of the three that holds the massive Idukki reservoir, were opened when the water breached the red alert mark of 2,399 feet.

When the last of the five shutters of the dam was opened on Friday afternoon, the Idukki dam, one of the biggest arch dams in Asia, was brimming with water from an unprecedented downpour that has flooded large swathes of the state.
