Student drowns during swimming competition

Kannur: A student from New Mahe MM Higher Secondary School drowned during a swimming competition held at Thalassery in the district on Tuesday.

Hrithik Raj, a class nine student, drowned soon after the Thalassery sub-district (south) competition started at the Jagannatha temple pond at 10 am.

His body was recovered after nearly two hours of rescue operations. Officials said that swimming competitions had been held in the same venue for 35 years and no such accidents were reported.

The Thalassery police said that body was shifted to general hospital for post-mortem and an investigation was on.

Hrithik is the son of K Rajan and Mini from New Mahe. He has a brother Karthik.
