13 students airlifted from hostel near Chengannur

Airlift

Chengannur: A Naval helicopter has plucked to safety 13 of 30 students trapped inside the women's hostel of Sree Aiyappa College at Eramallikara. Two female students were earlier rescued by their own families.

The remaining 15 could not be picked up on Saturday because inclement weather prevented any further operation by the time the first mission was completed in the evening. They will be rescued on Sunday.

The rescued students, who landed at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, said the Naval team has assured them that Sunday's first rescue mission will be for the students still remaining trapped in the hostel.

The students were provided with food and water in the morning. The plan was to rescue all 28 students who were stuck in the hostel. The helicopter returned to Thiruvananthapuram for a fuel refill as it had to stay in the air for longer time than was expected.

Meanwhile, some of the rescued girls said that some women in the locality harassed them, saying that the rescue choppers would damage their houses. The local people had also picked up a quarrel with the families of the two students who were rescued earlier.
