Kerala man sends talaq note, women's panel to file case
Triple talaq

Kannur: The Kerala Women's Commission has urged the central government to bring in a law favourable to women at the receiving end of the triple talaq custom. Women’s commission chairperson M C Josephine also said the panel would file a case against a man from Perumba in Kannur district who 'divorced' his wife by writing an arbitrary note on a white paper.

Josephine said triple talaq was a religious law that was anti-women. She said only courts had the power to grant divorces in India and religious systems or religious leaders had no business in it. She was reacting to media reports that a 23-year-old woman from Payyannur was divorced by her husband of five years through a note.

The couple have a four-year-old son. The man married another girl within nine days of divorcing his wife, according to reports.

The woman last week moved the local court, seeking action against her husband, 30-year-old Liyakath Ali Khan, his new wife, parents and other relatives on charges of domestic violence.

According to the woman, she got married to Ali in March 2013 and was given talaq on July 13, 2018.

Jospehine said that the women's commission would file a case on the basis of media reports. She said the incident was shocking because the man claimed to have arbitrarily divorced his wife, not even in the presence of religious leaders.
