WhatsApp group raises home for flood-wrecked member
The construction of the house, which has two rooms and a kitchen, was finished within a week.

Kilimanoor, Thiruvananthapuram: Philanthropists are active to chip in with as much help as possible to help people reeling after the recent disastrous floods in Kerala. For instance, the members of a WhatsApp group have built a new abode for irs member, A V Mohanan, whose house was severely damaged in the recent floods. Mohanan couldn’t ask for a better Onam gift from his online friends gathered under the banner Tholikuzhi WhatsApp Group.

Mohanan’s small house, which had just a tarpaulin roof, was damaged after a tree fell on top of it in the strong rains. As the mud walls collapsed and roof leaked, the family members moved out of the damaged house. It was then Mohanan, who works at a bakery at Tholikuzhi in Thiruvananthapuram district, conveyed his plight to the WhatsApp group.

The group, which had already collected relief materials worth Rs 1.5 lakh for the people in various relief camps in the neighbouring district, soon decided to find solution for Mohanan’s distress as well.

The construction of the house, which has two rooms and a kitchen, was finished within a week. The key to the finished house was handed over to Mohanan on the day of ‘Thiru Onam’ by Babu, who volunteered to do the construction free of cost.
