Chennai: At least seven people, including six Keralites, were killed when a Thiruvalla-bound bus collided with another bus near Salem in Tamil Nadu on Saturday. Around 30 injured were admitted to government and private hospitals nearby.
The deceased were identified as Alappuzha native Jem Jacob, 58; George Joseph, 60; wife Alphonsa, 55; Siji Vincent, 35; wife Tinu Joseph, 32 and Shanu, 28. The seventh person, a nearly 40-year-old man, was yet to be identified.
The private bus from Salem rammed the Kerala-bound bus from Bengaluru while trying to overtake another vehicle on the national highway near Mamangam. The Kerala-bound bus toppled in the impact of the accident.
The death toll is likely to rise. The accident happened around 1.45 am Saturday.
Police personnel rushed to the spot to carry out rescue operations.
