NCW summons PC George over abusive language against rape survivor

Kottayam: National Commission for Women (NCW) on Monday summoned Poonjar MLA PC George for using abusive language against the nun allegedly raped by a Roman Catholic bishop.

The NCW has asked George to appear before the commission before September 20 to provide an explanation for making such statements while occupying a responsible position in society.

While addressing the media here on Saturday, the independent MLA sought to know why the nun had not complained in the initial stage of sexual misbehaviour by bishop Franco Mulakkal of Jalandhar diocese.

Lashing out at the Kerala, MLA NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma on Sunday said such incidents were shameful.

In July this year, the nun led a complaint with the Kottayam district police chief, alleging that Jalandhar bishop Franco Mulakkal had raped her and had unnatural sex with her multiple times at a small town near Kottayam between 2014 and 2016.

Catholic reformation organisations and nuns from a convent in Kottayam, to which the 'rape' survivor belonged, have extended their support to the survivor.
